My former colleague Scott Brown heads the technology group at microplace. Much like kiva (I've been floating a few bills around kiva for the last few years) and funded by PayPal.

Just a side note on Backpacker Vacation Inn on the North Shore of Oahu - It's true, it was not my favorite place (although not the worst place we've ever stayed by a long shot). And, after a day or so, I came to the conclusion that you really do have to take the place with a grain of surfer sand. There's a very male bachelor feel to the place - things are well worn in, the minimum of "clean" but very laid back and friendly. You do get a sense of the surfer culture, when 5 am rolls around and the hardcore surfers are stirring around, getting their boards and heading out to the beach. The staff was very welcoming and helpful, as was the owner. The key is remembering that you're staying there for the location. The rest is either bonus or ignorable.

Feeling the one true aloha on Kauai, oh yes. The Big Island is great and every place in the Islands has its charms, but Kauai is like something from out of a unreal painting or the kind of dream you have after eating a lot of spicy food. Can somewhere this beautiful truly exist? Now you know; tell no one. Well, no one within the range of your blog entry, anyhow.

Mahalo for the photos, as if we needed further incentive to return.
